Former Toronto Raptors power forward Luis Scola signed a one-year contract with the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical. Brian Lewis of the New York Post confirmed the deal.
It was clear that Scola took a backseat to Bismack Biyombo and Patrick Patterson on the block, making him expendable this summer.
Scola's days of making an impact on the offensive end seem like they're behind him—he shot an abysmal 25.8 percent from the field in the postseason—but he's still a serviceable rebounder and defender. Limiting his minutes is probably key, of course, as he has clear deficiencies in his game at this point in his career. But he's still a capable contributor in a reserve role.
For the Nets, his ability to come off the bench and provide a veteran presence and leadership while crashing the boards means he should secure a role with the team, however minimal. And while Scola hasn't won a title, he has plenty of postseason experience dating back to his time with the Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers.
He'll likely fight for playing time with Trevor Booker, Chris McCullough at power forward, while Brook Lopez is the team's best player at center and Justin Hamilton was likely signed to play both the 4 and 5. That means Scola will be nothing more than a deep rotational option.
